Pump up your stereo, GMHBA is turning 90!
We are thrilled to announce a special celebration in honour of GMHBA’s 90th birthday, and we would love for our members to join us in marking this milestone.
Founded in 1934 as a health insurance scheme for workers at the Australian Cement Company in Geelong, GMHBA is now Australia’s leading regionally based not-for-profit health insurer, providing coverage to more than 320,000 Australians. GMHBA was founded with a vision to support and care for our community's health and well-being. Since then, we have grown, evolved, and continuously adapted to meet the needs of our members.
90 song countdown and outdoor broadcast
With our official birthday days away on 13 August, we are keeping the party going and have partnered with bay 93.9 to host a two-week competition where you could win $1,934 – the year GMHBA began!
From Monday 5 August head to bay 93.9’s 90 song countdown (bay939.com.au) and vote for your favourite song – whether you’re a Swiftie or more of a classic rock fan, we want to hear what songs are on repeat at your house.
Next week, the list of the top 90 songs nominated will published on bay 93.9’s website and you can vote for your favourite. Once the rankings are in, the Countdown will play on Thursday 15 August from 9am and whoever nominated* the number one song will win $1,934.
You can listen to the Countdown on bay 93.9 or join us in person on Thursday 15 August from 10am to 2pm, where we’re hosting a live broadcast, right outside our head office at 60 Moorabool Street, Geelong. This will be a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some live entertainment, win some prizes, meet some Geelong Football Club players, and perhaps even get a shoutout on the radio!
We hope you will join us in these festivities and help us celebrate 90 wonderful years of GMHBA.
* If there are multiple nominations for the same song that is ranked first in the Countdown, a winner will be drawn at random.
The GMHBA Geelong branch is headed home
Moorabool Street has been the home of GMHBA since 1963 and later this year we’ll be opening a new health hub on the ground floor of the GMHBA building. This flagship site will bring together all GMHBA services under the one roof, including:
- Health Insurance
- Eye Care
- Dental Care
- Medical
- Physiotherapy
We'll keep members updated closer to the opening date.
Junior Member Clinic
In July, 80 junior members and friends joined Cats legends Tom Hawkins, Mitch Duncan, Tom Stewart and Sam De Koning for a Junior Member Clinic to run through drills and fine tune their footy skills. This was an incredible experience for members and their families.

GMHBA anniversary dinner
In June, 180 guests including our members and patients, the medical community, our community partners, and some of our long-serving GMHBA team members came together to reflect on the history of GMHBA and the community and look towards our bright future.
The evening included the announcement of the upcoming $62 million return of COVID-19 claims savings to GMHBA Ltd members, live music, a Welcome to Country by proud Wadawarrung woman Jenna Oldaker and a guest presentation by the extremely accomplished and inspiring Dr Jana Pittman.

As a member-focused, not-for-profit health fund we exist for the community. Thank you to you, our current members, and the generations who came before who saw a need and an opportunity to pool their resources to help one another. We look forward to supporting the GMHBA community for another 90 years.
