The health and wellbeing of our members, community and staff is a top priority for GMHBA.

We take our position of supporting the health of our community seriously and want to do everything we can to help reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout the Geelong region.

Mental Health Workshop

Are you experiencing anxiety and/or depression? Are you a personal support person for someone with anxiety and/or depression?

If you are a GMHBA member or non-member that is experiencing mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression, or you are the personal support person for someone with mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression, we invite you to register and participate in one of our free mental health workshops.

Health Seminar with Sam Wood - Overcoming exercise barriers and debunking food myths. 

Sam Wood is one of Australia's leading fitness experts and a personal trainer with over 18 years’ experience. You may know him as the Bachelor from Season 3, where Australia watched him fall in love with his now-wife Snezana.

Sam has a refreshingly honest and relatable take on all things health and fitness. He is the founder of 28 by Sam Wood, a program he developed to support and educate people to create genuine change and sustainable results on their fitness journey. GMHBA has partnered with Sam and his nutritionist Steph Wearne to present "Overcoming barriers to physical exercise & de-bunking food myths".

  • Myth #1 - Clean eating is the perfect way to eat.
  • Myth #2 - Sugar is the devil.
  • Myth #3 - You need to cut out carbs to lose weight.

Building resilience in children and teens

Author of the bestselling Unlocking Your Child’s genius, Tricky Kids, Tricky people, Raising Real People (ACER), From Surviving To Thriving (ACER), Work Smarter Not Harder and Beating Bullies.

He has worked with over 200,000 young people nationwide in over 1500 schools and has extensively researched how to create great outcomes for kids.

Andrew has also co-authored a series of programs for the promotion of resilience and emotional intelligence used in over 3500 schools in Britain and Australia called The Heart Masters. He is a Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Healthy parents = healthy baby

How what we do, eat and feel before, during and after pregnancy create a healthy child.

Pregnant, or planning on becoming a new parent? In GMHBA’s upcoming maternal wellbeing seminar, we learn how modern lifestyle and the diet of parents before, during and after pregnancy can impact the mental health and overall wellbeing of our whole family.

Peter Vuillermin

Peter Vuillermin is Professor of Paediatrics at Deakin University and Barwon Health. He has an interest in the role women’s gut bacteria have in promoting healthy immune development in their baby during pregnancy. Peter leads the Barwon Infant Study. Peter’s group endeavour to place cutting edge laboratory studies in the context of real people in the real world, with the ultimate goal of preventing allergic disease and asthma.

Suzanne Higgins

Suzanne Higgins has a nursing background including Mental Health and Maternal and Child Health. She is well known in Geelong and Colac-Otway Shire for her work with St of God Raphael Services. She studied ‘first time parent couples combining parenting and paid work’ for her doctoral thesis and completed a Master of Mental Health (Perinatal and Infant) in 2011. She is passionate about supporting families during this life stage and feels privileged to share a tiny part of their journey. Her area of expertise is in working with both men and women during the perinatal phase who may be experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, significant distress and/or birth related PTSD.

After a fantastic seminar last year on preventing and treating mental disorders through what we eat, Professor Felice Jacka is returning to the GMHBA community to explain more about how the gut microbiota influences mental health and what you can do about it via diet or probiotics for children, teens and adults.
