To celebrate Dental Health Week 2024, GMHBA is giving Healthier Together readers the opportunity to win 1 of 5 Oral B electric toothbrushes, along with some pro tips for teeth brushing.
We all know that teeth brushing is an important part of our daily hygiene routine. It helps to remove food and plaque from the teeth, prevent tartar from forming and freshen the breath. But did you know that our oral health can also have an impact on our mind and body health and general wellbeing?
At GMHBA we’re passionate about dental care, which is why we want to make sure members are brushing properly and staying on top of their dental hygiene in between check-ups. The GMHBA Dental Care team recommend the following tips:
- Brush for two minutes, twice daily (morning and evening) using a soft-bristled toothbrush. As many as 1 in 5 Australian adults only brush once per day!
- Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay or stop it from worsening.
- Brush gently in circular motions. Do not press too hard as this can damage your teeth and gums.
- Gently brush the top of your tongue. This helps remove a build-up of bacteria from the surface that can cause bad breath.
- Spit out excess toothpaste after brushing but resist the urge to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water – this prolonged contact of toothpaste with teeth is important for fluoride to work its magic.
- Replace your toothbrush every 3 months (each season) or when you notice the bristles start to spread. You should also switch toothbrushes or toothbrush heads if you have experienced a viral illness.
No matter how many times or how thoroughly you brush your teeth, you’ll still need to clean between your teeth. ‘Interdental cleaning’ is recommended daily using string floss or flossettes, interdental brushes or a water flosser.
Feeling inspired to get brushing? We’re giving away five Oral-B smart 5000 electric toothbrushes, each with two handles: one for you and your partner or one for the bathroom and the gym bag!
