Run4Geelong’s new race set to encourage greater access

Published 28 Oct 2024

  • Geelong’s favourite community fun run has added a whole new race distance to increase access for all abilities and all ages.
  • The GMHBA Run4Geelong 3km walk/run category was created after consultation with the 2024 event’s new inclusion partner, Leisure Networks.
  • Participation in the event will be stimulated by Leisure Networks’ collaboration with local specialist schools to further boost engagement.
  • Run4Geelong registration for students at Geelong specialist schools will generously be funded by 3km race partner, GMHBA.

The countdown until Run4Geelong is officially on, with the streets of Geelong turning red on Sunday November 10.

In addition to the traditional 10km, 5km, and Kids' 1km dash, this year’s new GMHBA 3km course offers a shorter, more accessible route for those wanting to take part, all in support of the region’s health service, Barwon Health.

GMHBA CEO David Greig said the organisation was delighted to support this initiative.

“Creating opportunities for all members of our community to join in inclusive events like this aligns perfectly with our purpose to support and empower our communities to live healthier lives,” he said.

“GMHBA is delighted to partner with Leisure Networks to enable students from six specialist schools in the Geelong region to participate in Run4Geelong for free. By supporting Run4Geelong, we’re not only supporting the Barwon Health Foundation, but promoting an active lifestyle and bringing our community together.”

As a long-time champion of inclusion, Leisure Networks has been named as the official inclusion partner for this year’s Run4Geelong.  Leisure Networks is proud to be working with specialist schools in the community to empower students to participate in this community-focused event. Thanks to GMHBA’s generous sponsorship covering registration fees for the students, barriers have been broken down, making it easier for more students to get involved and experience the joy of inclusion and participation.

“By hosting inclusive events, it speaks volumes about our great community and its dedication to creating opportunities for everyone to be involved—including people with disabilities, women and girls, and members of the LGBTQI community, CEO Leisure Networks David Meade said.

This is true community inclusion, where everyone belongs—whether walking, rolling, or running, we’re doing it together at Run4Geelong!

Barwon Health Foundation Executive Director Zoe Waters said Barwon Health Foundation was committed to making the Geelong Advertiser Run4Geelong 2024 one of the biggest and best events held in recent years.’

“We are excited that the addition of the 3km race category will broaden the appeal and access of the special event and hope to see even more of the community take to the streets of Geelong on Sunday November 10. We’re appreciative of the advice and support from both Leisure Networks and GMHBA to help empower people and our communities to connect and thrive.”
